Jack Stanley and I went to Guatemala this past summer. It was really an eye-opening experience for us in a long time. Children have to work day and night to help their families, and education is not a necessity as most kids have to work after 5-8 years of school. Girls married young in general, have children and take care of the family while their husbands go to work. It's a vicious cycle that is difficul to break out. This is no different than other poor countries in Africa, and Middle East and some parts of Asia. Despite its poverty, people dress colorfully in their costumes. Go Guatemala! |
